For “Ring Ring Long,” a program at The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto designed to introduce first-time visitors to the museum, we created a massive ring-shaped sofa measuring 4 meters in diameter — matching the size of Richard Long’s work “Kyoto Mud Circle.” Since the exhibition was scheduled to run for just under three months, we built it entirely from chip urethane foam, anticipating that it would be reused afterward. Artisans hand-carved and shaped the piece using this material, drawing out chip urethane’s distinctive texture: the sofa looks like stone, yet feels surprisingly springy to the touch — a playful contrast that became one of the work’s defining charms. Thanks to its popularity, it remains in use at The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto today.
